During a series of unexplained events, electrical lineman Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) encounters a UFO on a deserted road. Following the bizarre experience, Roy becomes obsessed with what he perceives as subliminal messages, distancing himself from his wife and children but coming into the orbit of a clandestine investigation by scientists, the military, and other survivors of similar encounters who are attempting to communicate with the otherworldly visitors.
