Two retired women, Nina (Barbara Sukowa) and Madeleine (Martine Chevallier), have been secretly in love for decades. Everybody, including Madeleine’s adult son and daughter, thinks they are simply neighbours, sharing a hallway on the top floor of their apartment building in Paris. The couple are in the final stages of realising a lifelong dream of moving to Rome, where they will live out their remaining years, finally living together openly as partners; the plan, however, necessitates Madeleine selling her apartment, a fact she anxiously conceals from her acquisitive children, as it will demand an uncomfortable explanation. When Madeleine suffers an incapacitating stroke, Nina is shut out of aiding in the recovery as she is known to the family as nothing more than the meddling neighbour. An unconventional romance, with much to say about the shackles of repression and expectation, Meneghetti’s tender film is a welcome reminder that love can occur at any age.
