THE TRUFFLE HUNTERS

Director: Michael Dweck, Gregory Kershaw

84 mins, Italy-USA, 2020, Digital

Deep in the densely forested mountains of Piedmont, in Northern Italy, a group of elderly men, and their canine companions, search for the prized tartufo bianco; desired by the world’s most exclusive restaurants, and their discerning clienteles, the location of the pungent fungus remains a rarefied mystery. It cannot be artificially cultivated or found, even by the most resourceful of modern excavators. The only people on earth who know how to dig it up are this small assortment of silver-haired specialists, guided by the remarkable olfactory abilities of their dogs, working independently from each other in an endeavour marked by eccentricity, pride, and competition. Composed of intimate moments, and filmed in painterly compositions, clearly the result of hours of trust-building, The Truffle Hunters is an elegy for a way of life that is gradually being compromised by climate change and financial greed.
