IFI FAMILY: ODDBALL AND THE PENGUINS

Director: Stuart McDonald

95 mins, Australia, 2015, Digital

This film screened on Sunday 25th August 2019.

From dogs to pelicans and penguins, several Australian films have successfully showcased the natural environment and the small-town communities who rally to its protection. In this gem of a film, director Stuart McDonald chooses the real-life colony of Fairy Penguins, situated on Middle Island off the coast of Warrnambool in south eastern Australia. Severely diminished in numbers and under threat from marauding foxes, the townspeople come up with the idea of shipping over some sheepdogs to protect the birds and the sanctuary. Mischievous dog Oddball, owned by chicken farmer Swampy, is the first to apply for the job. Granddaughter Olivia is determined to train the sleepy pet to do his duty in this witty and enchanting film.
