Winner of a number of major categories at this year’s Polish Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, the third feature from director Wojciech Smarzowski (The Wedding, The Dark House) is a riveting drama that turns the spotlight on a little-known episode in recent Polish history – the persecution of the Masurian people of what is now north-eastern Poland as the result of a power struggle between Germany and the Soviet Union.

Leaving Warsaw after the rape and murder of his wife by German soldiers, Tadeusz (Marcin Dorociński) makes his way to the farm of a former comrade’s widow, Rose (Agata Kulesza), whose land is not the only thing to have been violated repeatedly. Despite their initial wariness, a tentative, protective bond forms, eventually deepening to a genuine and tender love. While the film is undeniably bleak, almost brutal, it finds a sliver of light in the central relationship, played to perfection by the two leads.
