A thrilling cocktail of sex, violence and deliciously inappropriate humour, Paul Verhoeven’s Elle is by turns a mischievous, controversial and profoundly serious work; a high-wire act that blends subtlety, nuance, rich characterisation and intellectual complexity into its decidedly unconventional rape revenge fantasy framework.

Isabelle Huppert plays Michèle, the head of a video games company who is brutally raped in her home; her alarmingly indifferent reaction to the assault and disinterest in contacting the police speaks to her gradually revealed past.

A satisfying tangle of subplots involving her son, mother, lover and ex-husband enrich this knotty, wilfully provocative character study that rejects classification and confounds expectation at every turn.
