A highly personal project for actor Elliott Page, Close to You emerges from his experience coming out as a trans man, and comes soon after the publication of the actor’s acclaimed memoir, Page Boy, and expands fictionally on some of the themes raised therein. Sam (Page) is a transgender man living in a friend’s house in Toronto; he is due for his first visit in four years to his family home on the occasion of his father’s birthday, a reunion he is palpably dreading, feeling that his family failed to support him in his transitioning.  On the train home, he runs into Katherine (Hillary Baack), a friend from high school who is now married with children, and their unresolved and complicated feelings for each other begin to resurface.
