AMERICAN INDEPENDENTS: RIVER OF GRASS Director: KELLY REICHARDT 76 mins, USA, 1994, Digital. Her films tend to focus on those living in society’s margins, and though they may be minimalist in style, they can be profoundly moving, as in, for example, the beautiful and heartbreaking Wendy and Lucy (2008). In this typically understated slice-of-life drama laced with humour wry and dry, bored housewife Cozy (Lisa Bowman) meets slacker Lee (Larry Fessenden), owner of a gun that gets the two into trouble and sends them on the lam.
