UNDER THE TREE

Director: HAFSTEINN GUNNAR SIGURÐSSON

89 mins, Iceland, 2017, Digital, Subtitled

This film was released 10th August 2018, and is no longer screening.

A minor dispute over the shade cast by a tree on the property boundary of two families escalates out of control in Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson’s pitch black-humoured tale of suburban disaffection.

When Atli (Steinþór Hróar Steinþórsson) is thrown out of their apartment by wife Agnes (Lára Jóhanna Jónsdóttir) and barred from seeing their young daughter, he is forced to move back home with retired parents Inga (Edda Björgvinsdóttir) and Baldwin (Sigurður Sigurjónsson). Older son Uggi has been missing and presumed dead for some years, and the volatile Inga’s unresolved grief manifests though excessive daytime drinking. The tense situation is further enflamed by squabbles over the shade cast by a garden tree…
