Ingrid Bergman’s place in the pantheon of acting legends is indisputable; the life of the three-time Oscar-winning star of such perennial favourites as Casablanca, Notorious and Journey to Italy is explored by Stig Bjorkman in this documentary that charts
her career from the early days as a Swedish ingénue who captivated the world to Hollywood’s brutal rejection of her in the wake of her scandalous affair with Roberto Rossellini at the peak of her popularity.

Taking the form of a collage of thoughtfully compiled archival footage – much of it shot by Bergman who documented her life on a 16mm camera she carried everywhere she went – interspersed with voiceover readings of her correspondence (by Swedish actress Alicia Vikander) and candid to-camera interviews with her children, collaborators and friends, In Her Own Words is an illuminating portrait of a cinematic icon.

You can also see Ingrid Bergman in our Hangover Lounge feature this month is Journey to Italy. (Notes by David O’Mahony.)
