John is working as a taxi driver in Dublin and struggling to make ends meet. He lives with his mother Jean, who he is devoted to, despite Jean being a committed and unrelenting alcoholic. When she is hospitalised after her latest drinking binge and confronted with the fact that she is slowly killing herself, Jean’s last hope is an expensive rehab clinic. To make enough money to rescue her, John takes a risky move and looks to exploit connections he has made with Dublin’s criminal world.
Following his acclaimed debut Pilgrim Hill, Gerard Barrett’s brilliant and affecting new film confirms him as the most vital young filmmaker working in Ireland today. Barrett gets powerful performances from Toni Collette and Jack Reynor (recipient of a major acting award at Sundance 2015) in lead roles, and there is great support from Michael Smiley and Will Poulter.
