Seems there is always space for a new Christmas film, and this latest from US director Alexander Payne, (Nebraska, Sideways) fits the bill. Paul Giametti is unforgettable as the grumpy boarding school master, Mr Hunham, who is left with the responsibility for the ‘holdover’ kids who have nowhere to go during the Christmas holidays. Into his care comes troubled, intelligent teen Angus, equally unenthusiastic for the enforced holiday stay, while the head cook Mary, Oscar-winning Da’Vine Joy Randolph, adds some warmth and care to the mix, despite living with her own sadness.

This warm, funny film, with some heartbreaking moments, ultimately brings comfort and joy.
