Marking 30 years since its release and shortlisted by Wild Strawberries for the May film tour with access>CINEMA, this Clint Eastwood-directed and -starring adaptation of Robert James Waller’s novel proved a passionate, will-she-won’t-she drama, set against the lush Iowa farmland backdrop with its famed covered bridges. When photographer Robert Kincaid wanders into the settled 1960s homelife of Italian Francesca (Meryl Streep), he sparks four days of an emotional rollercoaster as the pair fall deeply in love. Beautifully shot, deeply moving, heartbreaking yet resolute, a perfect Christmas distraction.
