WILD STRAWBERRIES: THE BIRDCAGE Director: MIKE NICHOLS 117 mins, USA, 1996, Digital Book cinema tickets June is Pride month, an annual celebration and commemoration of LGBTQ+ pride. To mark 50 years of Pride in 2024, we are screening The Birdcage for Wild Strawberries. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are the Miami nightclub-owning gay couple whose son’s future father-in-law is an ultra-conservative politician, played by Gene Hackman. Based on the original French play, La Cage aux Folles, this ’90s comedy still offers much by way of humour, with killer lines from co-writer Elaine May; there is added poignancy from watching the late Robin Williams, bringing a calm and funny brilliance to a film about alternative families and gender issues. The screening on Wednesday 26th will be Open Captioned. Notes by Alicia McGivern Director: MIKE NICHOLS 117 mins, USA, 1996, Digital
