While The Tudors TV series familiarised whole new audiences with a supercharged, raunchy interpretation of Henry VIII’s life and times, this richly costumed drama places Henry’s sixth wife, Katherine Parr, at the centre, imagining Tudor women whose very existence was at the behest of powerful men.

Alicia Vikander plays the accomplished and educated Katherine, who reluctantly agrees to marry the despotic Henry. Familiar with the tragic ends of her predecessors, she plots to find a way to assuage Henry’s doubts. Jude Law is magnificent as the increasingly paranoid, bloodthirsty, villainous king who will do anything to retain power.
