WHAT THE SUN HAS SEEN

Director: MICHAL ROSA

POLAND| 2006. SUBTITLED. COLOUR. DIGITAL STEREO. 107 MIN.

Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it does afford the opportunity to obtain self-worth in writer-director Michal Rosa’s impressive third feature. Unknown to each other, a little boy, a young teenage girl and a man in his fifties named Jozef (Krzysztof Stroinski) are each desperate to raise a certain amount of money. Set in a large Silesian city in southern Poland, What the Sun Has Seen follows these three characters as they struggle to succeed despite many obstacles and disappointments. As the unrelated stories come to overlap and intertwine in unexpected ways, the film’s preoccupation with economic hardship melds with a portrayal of lying—some told by the three protagonists, others which they tell themselves. This is a touching portrait of the struggle for human dignity.
