WAITING FOR HAPPINESS

Director: ABDERRAHMANE SISSAKO

FRANCE-MAURITANIA • 2002 • SUBTITLED • COLOUR • DOLBY STEREO SR • 95 MIN

In the tiny seaside town of Nouadhibou on the coast of Mauritania, Abdallah, a teenager who’s more interested in Western fashions than African culture, pays a final visit to his mother before leaving for Europe. As Abdallah waits and wonders about his future, we are offered a rare glimpse into African life and the characters who make up this stunningly beautiful but forlorn, sand-swept village. Director Sissako based the story on his own experience of exile and return, and his film won a major prize at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. These screenings are made possible by the generous sponsorship of Irish Aid. Admission is free, but tickets must be obtained from the box office.
