Triumph of the Will

Director: Leni Riefenstahl

Triumph of the Will is a filmed record of the 1934 Nazi Party Convention held in Nuremberg. It’s a celebration of Adolf Hitler, who is visually characterised as God on Earth from the moment his plane descends from the clouds. Dispensing with the ‘Jewish question’ in a few fleeting close-ups, filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl prefers to concentrate on cheering crowds, precision marching, military bands and Hitler’s climactic speech, all of which are choreographed and filmed on a scale that makes Griffith and DeMille look like poverty-row directors. A brilliant technical achievement, this is still one of the most disturbing pieces of propaganda ever made.
Germany, 1936. English subtitles. Black and white. 120 mins.
