Clint Bentley’s lyrical second feature, adapted from Denis Johnson’s 2011 novella, is a poignant character study of one Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton), a logger and railroad worker traversing the Pacific Northwest during the early decades of the 20th century. Orphaned young, Robert grows up among the wild beauty of an America on the brink of industrial transformation. He marries Gladys (Felicity Jones), and together they raise a daughter while Robert spends long periods away. When a tragedy strikes, Robert is forced to reckon with loss, memory, and guilt. As the world around him changes, he searches for meaning in the rhythm of seasons, relationships, and what remains when dreams are deferred. With visual echoes of Terrence Malick, Train Dreams is an evocative portrait of ordinary life made extraordinary by love, endurance, and the beauty of the natural world.
