Hasan Hadi’s award-winning debut feature follows nine-year-old Lamia, who has been selected to bake the cake for her class’s obligatory celebration of President Saddam Hussein’s birthday, a nearly impossible task in a country ravaged by war and scarcity. With her grandmother, loyal friend Saeed, and pet rooster, Hindi, Lamia embarks on a perilous journey through chaotic markets and city streets to find the requisite eggs, flour, and sugar, confronting hardship, danger, and resilience along the way.
