THE BIGGER PICTURE: THE BIRDCAGE Director: MIKE NICHOLS 117 mins, USA, 1996, Digital Please enable cookies if you want to view this trailer Book cinema tickets Armand (Robin Williams) and Albert (Nathan Lane) run the titular nightclub on Miami’s South Beach, where star attraction Starina, Albert’s drag persona, captivates her adoring audience. The couple’s queer paradise is upended when their straight son, Val (Dan Futterman), brings his fiancé, Barbara (Calista Flockhart), and her ultra-conservative (and not even a little Jewish) parents (memorably played by Dianne Wiest and Gene Hackman) to dinner. A farcical comedy of errors ensues when Albert and Armand are forced to transform into a heterosexual couple for the occasion. For his update of beloved French classic La Cage aux Folle (1978), Mike Nichols called upon the razor-sharp services of Elaine May, his long-time writing partner, and the resulting mix of belly-laughs and poignant gender non-conforming family dynamics is a crowd-pleasing delight. The screening will be introduced by writer, editor, and programmer James Hudson. Notes by David O’Mahony.
