Director: Jared Hess, Andrea Arnold

122 mins, USA-UK, 2004, Digital

It’s almost 20 years since director Jared Hess released his alienated, nerdy teen Napoleon Dynamite into the world. As a bored outsider in high school, Napoleon decides to help his new friend, Pedro, win class presidency. At home, life with his grandma and older brother offers its own amount of weird too, yielding some hilarious moments. Garnering rave reviews on its release, Napoleon’s geekiness won a cult following for Jon Heder in the lead, and Hess for his first film, which went on to spawn a six-part animation series.

Also showing, Wasp, a short, heart-rending Oscar -winning film by Andrea Arnold, in which a single mother of 4 is trying desperately to care for her kids while rekindling a relationship with an old boyfriend.

Actor, filmmaker, and singer Maria Doyle Kennedy will introduce Napoleon Dynamite and Wasp for IFI Bigger Picture.
