THE BIGGER PICTURE: COWBOYS AND ANGELS

Director: David Gleeson

89 mins, Ireland-Germany, 2003, 35mm

Leading up to Dublin Pride Festival 2024, our Bigger Picture choice for June, from Pride’s Colm Molloy, is this Limerick-set gay drama about a young man moving away from home for the first time. Shane is a naïve 20-something civil servant whose housemate is gay fashion student, Vincent (Allen Leech). Into the mix comes Gemma, friends with Vincent, and Shane finds himself lured into carrying drugs for cash with which to impress her, while his decisions threaten to alienate his friends, in a fun and thoughtful look at friendship and establishing your identity in new surrounds.

Colm Molloy is a nonbinary visual artist, designer and queer historian. They have been a human rights activist since 1998 when they were a founding member of Gay Peer Action, a sex education outreach programme. They have volunteered with Dublin Pride since 2000 and have created the festival graphics since 2015.
