THE ANARCHIST’S WIFE

Director: MARIE NOËLLE & PETER SEHR

GERMANY-FRANCE-SPAIN • 2008 • SUBTITLED COLOUR • DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO • 35MM • 112 MIN

Another international co-production, this handsomely mounted period piece marks the latest collaboration between French filmmaker Marie Noëlle and German director Peter Sehr. Set during the harrowing years of the Spanish Civil War and the end of World War II, it’s the story of a couple and their undying love.

Lawyer Justo Calderon (Juan Diego Botto) fights against Franco both in the trenches and on the radio as the ‘Voice of the Revolution’. His elegant young wife Manuela (Maria Valverde) and their daughter Paloma (Ivana Baquero) desperately try to preserve a semblance of domestic normality. However, what little stability they acquire is soon robbed from them when Justo is seized and disappears. His separation from the family lasts for years, as the whole of Europe descends into the chaos of war. Throughout it all, Manuela never stops fighting to reunite her family. After seeing a photo in a magazine article on former concentration camp prisoners, she becomes convinced that it is Justo and her search takes on a new urgency.
