TADAS BLINDA. THE LEGEND IS BORN

Director: DONATAS ULVYDAS

110 minutes. Lithuania| 2011| Subtitled| Colour| D-Cinema

Tadas Blinda, the legendary 19th century Lithuanian outlaw and folk hero, is usually portrayed as a character comparable to Robin Hood. His place in his homeland’s imagination has persisted, and his story told many times, in literature, on stage, and even in a rock-opera. It was first made into a popular film in 1973, featuring a handsome leading man, dramatic hand-to-hand combat and feats of horsemanship, and the beautiful Lithuanian landscapes; it was an immediate success. Although at the time the film was released with the approval of the Soviet government, many of its viewers interpreted it as a veiled reference to the native guerrilla movement whose members, living in the forests, continued to resist the Soviet occupation during the 1940s and 1950s.

Nearly 40 years later, this epic new version, a tale of forbidden love, rebellion, sacrifice and honour, is the first historical action movie released in Independent Lithuania, and has broken virtually all box office records there. (Notes by Aivaras Zydelis.)
