Airline pilot Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger came to international attention on January 15th, 2009 when he saved the lives of the 155 passengers and crew of US Airways Flight 1549 by making an emergency water landing in New York’s Hudson River following the shutdown of the plane’s engines as the result of a bird strike.

The circumstances surrounding the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ are recounted in Clint Eastwood’s film, which sees Tom Hanks take on the role of a man who refused the label of ‘hero’ and insisted instead that he was simply doing his job. The film maintains a tight focus on the event itself and the subsequent inquiry that initially challenged Sully’s actions.

With solid support from Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney, this is a low-key salute to professionalism that saves its thrills for its depiction of the landing itself.
