A FAR CRY FROM THE OLD SCHOOL OF SWEDISH CINEMA, THIS IS AN AMBITIOUS, HEAD-SPINNING, EFFECTS-HEAVY SCIENCE FICTION MINI-EPIC, INSPIRED BY (AND AIMED AT AUDIENCES FAMILIAR WITH) GRAPHIC NOVELS AND VIDEO GAMES. A SMARTALECK, SCRUFFILY HANDSOME JOURNALIST AT STOCKHOLM’S EQUIVALENT OF TOTALLY DUBLIN FINDS HIMSELF IN A SECRET WAR BETWEEN FORCES OF GOOD AND EVIL. THE COMPLEX PLOT SEES PROTAGONIST DONNY (ERIC ERICSON) ON A CONSTANTLY DANGEROUS TRAIL WHERE HE BECOMES WANTED BY POLICE FOR A MURDER HE DIDN’T COMMIT, AND FINALLY FINDS HIMSELF IN THE RURAL TOWN WHERE HE GREW UP, FORCED TO FACE A PAST THAT INCLUDES A MENTALLY ILL YOUNGER BROTHER.
The multi-layered narrative is as much a journey for the audience as for the main character, and many of the questions raised—is all this happening, or is it Donny’s imagination?—are never really answered, heightening the sense of unease. Co-directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein have created a dark, intriguing web where action, drama, comic books and computer games meet, clearly inspired by movies like The Matrix.
