SRI LANKA: THE UNTOLD STORY

THE IRISH FORUM FOR PEACE IN SRI LANKA IS PRESENTING TWO RARE FILMS AS PART OF THEIR CAMPAIGN FOR THE
PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND FOR A NEGOTIATED POLITICAL SETTLEMENT TO THE CONFLICT IN SRI LANKA. This Is My Moon (Me mage sandai), director Asoka Handagama’s acclaimed third feature, explores the impact of the free market economy and the civil war against the Tamil separatists fighters on village life. It’s set in Sri Lanka’s northern war zone, where a soldier rapes a frightened Tamil woman. The disillusioned soldier deserts the army and returns to his drought-stricken village. The Tamil woman follows him and her presence heightens the sense of uncertainty brought about by the war and its unrelenting demands on the country’s poorest people. Prasanna Vithanage’s Death on a Full Moon Day (Pura Handa Kaluwara) features an extraordinary performance by veteran actor Joe Abeywickrama as Vannihamy, an elderly blind farmer who refuses to believe that his son has been killed in the civil war.
