SICARIO

Director: DENIS VILLENEUVE

121 minutes, U.S.A., 2015, Digital

This film was released on Friday 9th October 2015 and is no longer screening.

The ongoing conflict around drug trafficking on the U.S. border with Mexico – the subject of the recent documentary Cartel Land – is the basis for this ferociously realised action thriller from Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy). Emily Blunt plays idealistic FBI Field Agent Kate Macer; tasked with apprehending an infamous Mexican drug baron, she is invited to be part of a team whose motives are ambiguous and methods often unethical
Leaving their jurisdiction for Juarez, the group, which includes leader Matt (Josh Brolin) and the taciturn, unpredictable Alejandro (Benicio del Toro), find themselves in an unwinnable war where the rules of engagement are ignored and the Geneva Convention forgotten.

An incendiary piece of action cinema, Sicario has much to say on the futile nature of the war on drugs.(Notes by David O’Mahony.)
