A deeply personal project from Academy Award winning director and writer Alfonso Cuarón, Roma follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), one of two domestic workers that care for the children of Antonio and Sofia in Mexico City’s middleclass Roma neighbourhood. Complications arise when Antonio runs away with his mistress and Cleo discovers she’s pregnant. An emotionally wrenching, visually majestic love letter to the women who raised him, Cuarón draws on his formative years in a turbulent society to create a richly detailed portrait of domestic life and social hierarchy amidst Mexico’s political upheaval of the early 1970s. An intimate film of epic proportions, this special 70mm presentation will be the best way to experience Roma’s justly celebrated luminous black and white photography, sinuous camera movement, and immersive sound design.
