RAISING ARIZONA SEES THE COENS TAKING THEIR FIRST ENERGETIC SWIPE AT ANARCHIC COMEDY.
Emerging from yet another spell in prison, H. I. (‘Hi’) McDonagh (Nicolas Cage) finds temporary redemption in the arms of police officer Edwina (Holly Hunter). Dismayed by their inability to have a child, the couple decide to steal one of the quintuplets born to the wealthy Arizona family. Inevitably, however, this solution merely complicates matters as the couple find themselves playing host not only to the kid but also to a pair of renegade cellmates from Hi’s ignoble past. Add to this the impending threat presented by ‘The Lone Biker of the Apocalypse’, a bunny murdering lunatic hired by Nathan Arizona to retrieve his lost sprog, and the scene is set for zany antics aplenty. Boasting a number of strikingly surreal visual treats (the most notable being the images of the lone biker careering through the landscape of Hi’s tortured dreams), Raising Arizona makes no excuses for its loopy plot.
