NIGHT OF THE DEMON Director: JACQUES TOURNEUR 95 mins, UK, 1957, Digital Book cinema tickets This film screened 27th July 2016. Dr. John Holden (Dana Andrews) arrives in England to discredit occult leader Julian Karswell (Niall MacGinnis); but when Holden discovers he has been secretly slipped a parchment inscribed with an ancient curse he begins to suspect phenomena that his rational approach cannot explain. An adaptation of the M.R. James story Casting the Ruins (1911), Night of the Demon was a late career triumph for the great Jacques Tourneur (Cat People; I Walked with a Zombie); with the exception of a studio- sanctioned SFX monster, the use of which all concerned objected to, Night of the Demon is a sober, chillingly effective exercise in atmosphere and tension building. Screening as part of Haunted Landscapes, A Season of Folk Horror. July 16th-30th. Director: JACQUES TOURNEUR 95 mins, UK, 1957, Digital
