Irish Film Institute -MONTHLY MUST-SEE CINEMA: WEST OF KERRY

MONTHLY MUST-SEE CINEMA: WEST OF KERRY

Director: Patrick Keenan Hale

48 minutes, Ireland, 1938, Black and White

The film will be introduced by Ronan Browne, grandson of Delia Murphy.

This month’s gem from the IFI Irish Film Archive tells the story of a Blasket Island love triangle between Neal (Cecil Ford), a Trinity College medical student, Island woman Eileen (Eileen Curran) and the fisherman Liam (Brian O’Sullivan).

The impressive footage makes it a valuable visual document of louche student life in Trinity and of a now largely extinct way of life on the islands, showcasing currach racing, fishing and delightful performances at a céilí. The film features fine performances from Gabriel Fallon and other Abbey Theatre actors, and from Delia Murphy, the popular Mayo singer/songwriter who was known as the ‘Queen of Connemara’ for her remarkable voice.

IFI has changed from a monthly schedule to a weekly schedule. Screening times of New Releases and IFI Classics will now be announced on a weekly basis. Read our news item here.
