On hearing of the death of Nelson Mandela at the London premiere of Justin Chadwick’s keenly anticipated biopic, actor Idris Elba released a statement declaring, “what an honour it was to step into the shoes of Nelson Mandela and portray a man who defied odds, broke down barriers, and championed human rights before the eyes of the world”. Fittingly, Elba delivers a charismatic performance of great conviction here, while Naomie Harris, portraying Winnie Mandela, is as committed and excellent.

Depicting Mandela’s resistance to South Africa’s apartheid system, his trial and imprisonment, his years in jail on Robben Island and his part in bringing democracy to the country on his release, in normal circumstances the film would serve as a worthy tribute to his cherished ideals and nobility. Given Mandela’s passing, Chadwick’s film now stands as a touching eulogy to a great man.

Don’t forget we now schedule weekly.
