Carpentry teacher Olivier (Olivier Gourmet) seems a good, conscientious man, but why is he so interested in Francis (Morgan Marinne), a young teenager whom he initially refuses to have in his class but then, much to his estranged wife’s consternation, seems almost to befriend? That is but one of the many ambiguities and mysteries that enrich this unsentimental but supremely moving study of obsession, love, pain and forgiveness. As in Rosetta, the Dardennes keep an unusually close eye on their protagonist, and Gourmet, as ever, responds magnificently; it’s almost as if, though observed from behind, he can convey every emotion and thought with a shrug of his shoulder or turn of his head.
