Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Indian films are shown at 12 noon on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month. The prints shown are original versions which don’t usually have English subtitles. An exception is February’s title, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham/Sometimes Happy, Sometimes Sad (2001), which has outstripped recent hits such as Lagaan and Asoyka as the most successful Hindi film ever released in English-speaking countries. Director Karan Johar’s has described his film as being ‘all about loving your parents.’ It’s a sentimental saga about a family shattered by an unapproved marriage and eventually reunited. Johar expertly mixes all the ingredients necessary for commercial hit, and does so with considerable charm and skill. The all-star cast includes Amitabh, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. March’s film is Pitaah (2002), director Mahesh Manjrekar’s powerful rural drama starring Sanjay Dutt, Nandita Das and Om Puri.
