Godard ran into controversy with The Little Soldier, the second film he directed; completed in 1960, it was immediately banned due to its (for the time) unflinching depiction of torture during the Algerian War. The film remained suppressed for three years and was only released domestically in 1963, after the war ended. Michel Subor stars as Bruno, an army deserter caught in the middle of a covert war between the French government and the Algerian Liberation Front in Geneva. Bruno’s romance with the mysterious Véronica (Anna Karina in her debut role) deepens his moral crisis.
