Director: DONALD TAYLOR BLACK
80 mins, Ireland, 2024, Digital
Now in his mid-80s, John Behan RHA, perhaps Ireland’s best-known living sculptor, is as busy as ever with regular exhibitions in Ireland and overseas. Born in Dublin’s Sheriff Street in 1938, Behan became an active member of Dublin’s artistic community before moving to Galway where he has lived and worked for over 40 years. His best-known commissioned public sculpture is the National Famine Memorial in Co. Mayo.
Donald Taylor Black conjures Behan’s life and work through interview, observational footage, and richly illustrative archival film. This modest man reflects on a long and distinguished career as he travels to Athens, where he has given art workshops to migrants and refugees. A commitment to social justice has always been part of his life and work.
Followed by a Q&A with John Behan and Donald Taylor Black, hosted by Peter Sheridan.
