IFI TALKS: JANE GILES ON THE ART AND INDUSTRY OF FILM PROGRAMMING AND DISTRIBUTION

The career of Jane Giles has been fascinatingly varied. Selected by Laura Mulvey to study film, Jane graduated to become a BFI trainee in Regional Film Theatre Management. In 1988, she was appointed programmer of London’s legendary Scala cinema, overseeing the city’s most eclectic film programme, one which offered education and inspiration to an entire generation of aspiring creatives. Jane has also programmed for the London Film Festival, BFI Southbank, and ICA cinemas, although most of her career was spent heading up acquisitions for independent film distribution companies. Jane co-directed the recent documentary SCALA!!!, adapted from her awardwinning book about the cinema’s history. She’s also published film journalism and a key text on the cinema of Jean Genet. We’re delighted to welcome Jane to the IFI for what promises to be a wide-ranging, informative and entertaining talk on her experiences in the film industry.

Following the talk, there will be a screening of a Surprise Film chosen by Jane Giles to evoke the spirit of the Scala. The title will not be revealed before the event so please come with an open mind!
