IFI KINOPOLIS: THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT

Director: Wojciech Has

182 minutes. Poland, 1965. Subtitled. Digital.

We celebrate the centenary of one of the great Polish directors with this screening of one of his best-known films. The work of Wojciech Has is famed for its rich, often surreal imagery, a characteristic very much in evidence in The Saragossa Manuscript. This labyrinthine set of stories within stories begins with an officer in the Napoleonic Wars finding a book in the house in which he has taken refuge. The pages concern Alfonse (Zbigniew Cybulski), whose travels through Spain lead him to a series of encounters that in turn lead to further tales in this strange, magnificent epic of Polish cinema.

Notes by Kevin Coyne.

This screening will have a special introduction by filmmaker Paul Duane.

Screening as part of IFI Kinopolis Polish Film Festival 2025.
