Irish Film Institute -IFI EVENING COURSE: 2020S’ VISION – NEW AND RECENT IRISH CINEMA

IFI EVENING COURSE: 2020S’ VISION – NEW AND RECENT IRISH CINEMA

A FOUR-WEEK EVENING COURSE ON NEW AND RECENT IRISH CINEMA

Course Sessions; Tuesdays, March 4th – 25th  (18.30 – 21.00)

Course Price: €100.00 / €90.00* *(IFI Members or Concessions)

Irish cinema is going through a golden era of international acclaim, winning audiences for our Irish language and other productions, and admiration for the talent of our acting community. The breakout success of Kneecap is just one recent talking point, and we include this film on our 4-week course. Alongside the high-profile successes, Irish filmmakers have also quietly been making lower budget works that interrogate our culture and history. One such release is The Cry of Granuaile, which we also include in the programme.

This 4-week course, led by Dr Ruth Barton, TCD, will consider new and recent Irish cinema. Each evening will comprise a full screening and follow-up talk. As well as covering the films listed here, the accompanying lectures will open out to discussions of the film industry and other notable recent releases.

March 4: Lies we Tell (2023, Lisa Mulcahy, 89 mins)
March 11: Small Things Like These (2024, Tim Mielants, 98 mins)
March 18: Kneecap (2024, Rich Peppiatt, 105 mins)
March 25: The Cry of Granuaile (2022, Donal Foreman, 82 mins)

Places strictly limited. Course fee includes a full film screening each evening, tea/coffee and talk. Tickets not sold individually.

Dr Ruth Barton, Professor in Film Studies at TCD, will deliver the course. She is the author of several books on Irish cinema and has co-edited a volume of essays on Irish Cinema and Television as well as being the author of many articles on Irish and British cinema.
