Gael Linn’s Amharc Éireann newsreel (1956 – 1963), directed by Colm Ó Laoghaire and filmed by Jim Mulkerns and Nick O’Neill, chronicled a time of immense social, and political transition as Ireland moved from a period of economic protectionism towards outward-looking expansion under economist T.K. Whitaker and Taoiseach Seán Lemass.

Coinciding with the launch of The Amharc Éireann interactive map we explore the newsreel through a screening of Éire na Nuachtscannán (Ireland in the Newsreels) followed by a panel discussion with Dr Ciara Chambers (UCC), Réamonn Ó Ciaráin (Gael Linn), Nick O’Neill (cameraman), Donal Fallon (historian), and Helena Mulkerns (writer, pictured).
