Director: Jim Sheridan

Ire/UK| 1990| Drama| 107 mins

The Field is an epic story of life in the west of Ireland in the 1930s. Adapted from John B Keane’s play of the same name, Jim Sheridan’s film adaptation stars the late Richard Harris in a towering performance as the Bull McCabe. The story centres on the Bull’s struggle to buy the field he has lovingly nurtured from the Widow (Frances Tomelty). His rival for the field is the Irish American, the Yank, (Tom Berenger) who has returned from the US and plans to develop the area. Conflict between them escalates, and the more the Bull attempts to take control, the more he loses control over his land and himself, with violent and tragic consequences.
