DEMONS 2

Director: Lamberto Bava

ITALY • 1986 • COLOUR • DOLBY STEREO • 91 MIN

Don’t worry if you haven’t seen the original Demons — although shame on you if you haven’t — Lamberto Bava’s feverish sequel to his Italian smash hit is a self-contained riff on his previous tale of terror. Set in a high-rise apartment block in an unnamed German city, Demons 2 sees all hell (literally) break loose when the screening of a demonic TV documentary — future shades of The Ring here — unleashes a plague of sheer evil, one that threatens to infect anyone who crosses its path. The fingerprints of writer-producer Dario Argento are all over this gruesome free-for-all, as narrative coherence takes second place to one spectacularly icky set-piece after another; ignore the occasionally shambolic FX and dodgy dubbing, and revel instead in the divine madness of it all. Bloody bellissimo! Be sure to watch out for the acting debut by the producer’s daughter, ten-year old Asia Argento.
