BRANDO

Director: LESLIE GREIF, MIMI FREEDMAN

THIS EXTENDED DOCUMENTARY FROM TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES PROVIDES A COLOURFUL AND OFTEN VERY PERSONAL PORTRAIT OF BRANDO.

Not armed with any particular agenda, the film-makers examine Brando from a multitude of angles, combing clips and archive material with new testimonies from past colleagues such as Al Pacino, Jane Fonda and Sean Penn. There’s some fascinating early TV interviews, including one in which Brando is almost insulted by his father, who comes across as the kind of tyrant Marlon described in Last Tango in Paris. That film’s director, Bernardo Bertolucci, confirms the autobiographical nature of Brando’s contribution. Martin Scorsese also makes some illuminating comments, but even he can’t explain why Brando wasted so many opportunities and admits he couldn’t persuade the man to talk about the flawed but fascinating One-Eyed Jacks, his sole effort as director.
