Following the commercial failure of his directorial debut, Synecdoche, New York (2008), Charlie Kaufman, the brilliantly inventive writer of films such as Being John Malkovich (1999) and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), makes his long-awaited return with the stop-motion animation Anomalisa. Motivational speaker Michael (voiced by David Thewlis), whose existential despair manifests itself in his perception that everyone appears to have the same face and voice, arrives in Cincinnati for a conference appearance. After an encounter with an old flame, he is astonished to hear something different, the voice of Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh), whose own face he also sees.

Ecstatic at the break in monotony, Michael invites her to his hotel room, where the two make the connection for which he so longs. Cerebral, tender, and achingly sad, it’s a triumphant return for Kaufman’s own unique voice. (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)
