Even as hip-hop moved African-American culture towards a central and enduring place in the mainstream, the late-‘80s rise of Spike Lee seemed to signal a possible similar development in American cinema. Unfortunately, the ‘90s were to offer few opportunities to talented black filmmakers. Arguably the most impactful was John Singleton, and this, his debut feature. Set in South Central Los Angeles, it follows Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr., in his first major role), Ricky (Morris Chestnut), and Doughboy (N.W.A. founder member Ice Cube, making his acting debut) as they navigate their violence-filled environment in this powerful, empathetic, and deeply compassionate film.
