★★★★★ Irish Times

Released a month after the September 11th attacks, the initial response to Donnie Darko – an enigmatic film from an unknown director that was difficult to classify and which opened with a jet engine crashing into a suburban home – was subdued. Six months later, a devoted cult following had emerged and the Pioneer Theatre in New York started midnight screenings that would eventually run for 28 months. The film boasts many signature features, not least of which is its 1980s soundtrack including music from Tears For Fears, Echo & The Bunnymen and Duran Duran.

The unique atmosphere created by director Richard Kelly was achieved through more than astute song choices; his attention to minute detail in every frame, captured at times in fast and slow motion, and the performances he elicited from a motley cast means this film remains an absorbing and multi-layered experience.
