In 1947 London, Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) meets and falls for the handsome and charming Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), a law student from Bechuanaland (now Botswana). When Seretse proposes marriage, he reveals that he is in fact the crown prince of his country, to which he must soon return and assume power. The opposition the match faces from Ruth’s conservative family is nothing compared to that of the British Establishment and his homeland. With neighbouring South Africa imposing apartheid, the British government fears that this interracial marriage will be taken as an affront, leading South Africa, rich in mineral resources, to leave the Commonwealth, while Seretse’s decision to take a white bride is met with incredulous horror. Despite the various machinations employed to destroy the relationship, the two remain devoted to each other in this heartfelt and moving film. (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)
