In her arresting first feature, director Ana Lily Amirpour mixes such disparate elements as the Spaghetti Western, neo-noir, horror, the Iranian New Wave, Jean-Luc Godard, and Jim Jarmusch to create something absolutely original, a beautifully atmospheric, off-kilter, and indisputably cool film.

The Girl (Sheila Vand) wanders the streets of the lawless Bad City preying on the thugs who hold sway. One of these men has recently taken James Dean-wannabe Arash’s (Arash Marandi) pride and joy, his Thunderbird, as compensation for the money owed to him by Arash’s junkie father. On his way home from a costume party (dressed as Dracula), Arash encounters the Girl, and a tentative romance begins. Shot in pristine monochrome, one of the film’s greatest strengths is its striking visuals, including the unforgettable image of the Girl gliding silently down a deserted street on a skateboard, chador flowing behind her like a cape.
